Occupational First Aid Refresher

Course description

The module is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge, practical skills and understanding required to provide and coordinate first aid in the workplace in compliance with the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General
Application) Regulations 2007 and the associated Guide to these regulations.

Programme objectives

Candidates who successfully complete this module will:

  • Have completed the Occupational First Aid 3 day course within the last three years and require up skilling complying with the directives of the FETAC Level 5 prospectus
  • Be able to provide treatment in the workplace for an injury which does not require the attention of a medical practitioner or nurse
  • Be capable of coordinating first aid arrangements in the workplace
  • Be familiar with health and safety legislation on first aid provision in the workplace

Outline training plan

The specific educational outcomes are grouped into 7 units.

  1. Patient assessment
  2. Respiratory emergencies
  3. Cardiac first response
  4. Wounds and bleeding
  5. Altered levels of consciousness
  6. Musculoskeletal injuries
  7. Burns and scalds, chemicals, electric shock

Training approach

The course involves lectures (utilising verbal, practical, PowerPoint and video presentations), classroom question and answers sessions and practical classroom sessions utilising first aid equipment and sample first aid scenarios.

Assessment and certification

Assessment is based on the participation of attendees in practical demonstration of CPR skills, AED usage and two first aid skills selected from the course content as well as a written question paper. Upon successful completion of the assessment a temporary certificate is issued to the student and they are then registered with FETAC who will then issue a permanent certificate.
